pediatric intensive care unit at Children's Hospital. Reporter Anita Srikameswaran and
photographer Andy Starnes gained unprecedented access to the unit for several weeks this
spring. They document the daily life-and-death struggles and the emotional investments
required of both care-givers and families. |

Anita Srikameswaran, 29, joined the Post-Gazette as a medical
reporter in September 1997. She completed her Doctor of Medicine degree at the University
of Manitoba in 1993, did further training in public health and practiced general medicine
in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She has worked as a science writing intern at the Chicago Tribune
and received a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University in 1997. |

Andy Starnes, 47, joined the Post-Gazette as a photo editor in 1993. He
now splits his time between editing and photography. Before joining the Post-Gazette, he
worked as a photographer at The Pittsburgh Press. He has an undergraduate degree in
Psychology from Virginia Tech and currently resides in the Regent Square section of
Pittsburgh. |
