Highlights: Resilient Butler tops Upper St. Clair, 4-2

For the second consecutive season, Butler avenged a district playoff loss to Upper St. Clair by defeating the WPIAL champion Panthers, 4-2, in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA girls' soccer playoffs last night at Shaler.

Butler (18-3-2) was led by Meghan Schnur's two goals and one assist. Schnur scored her second goal on a penalty kick late in the first half, tying the score, 2-2, at halftime.

Jen Kienzele and Elise McCaskey scored for the Golden Tornado in the second half. Chelsea Behling and Erika Marshall scored goals for Upper St. Clair (18-3-4).

Girls' Class AAA soccer

General McLane 1, Mt. Lebanon 0: The Blue Devils (21-2-1) lost despite outshooting the District 10 champion Blue Devis, 20-2.

Penn-Trafford 5, Schenley 2: The WPIAL runner-up Warriors (19-3-2) rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit to defeat the City League champion Spartans (18-3-1) at Cupples Stadium. Lindsay Yeargers scored two goals in the final six minutes as Penn-Trafford pulled away. Megan Borden scored twice for the Warriors.

Girls' Class AA soccer

Quaker Valley 2, Karns City 0: Ali O'Donnell and Meta Haley scored goals for the Quakers (19-5) in a first-round game at East Allegheny. O'Donnell and Meta assisted on each other's goals. Karns City took only one shot.

Sewickley Academy 1, South Park 0: Sarah Sutherland scored for the WPIAL champion Panthers (23-1-1) on an assist from Tammy Hoch 25 minutes into a first-round game at Elizabeth Forward.

Fairview 2, Freeport 1: The Yellowjackets (14-6) lost at Erie Veterans' Stadium in three overtimes. Lacey Cochran scored Freeport's only goal in the second half.

Boys' Class AAA soccer

State College 2, Fox Chapel 0: The Foxes (19-3) gave up a goal in each half and were eliminated in a first-round game at Huntingdon.

Mt. Lebanon 1, Pine-Richland 0: Pat Kerr's goal with 29:29 left in a first-round game at Shaler led the WPIAL champion Blue Devils (23-2) to their 17th consecutive victory.

Chartiers Valley 4, Erie Prep 3: The Colts (12-9-1) upset the defending PIAA co-champions in overtime as Chartiers Valley's Travis MacKenzie scored three goals at Erie Veterans' Stadium.

Boys' Class AA soccer

Thomas Jefferson 7, Harbor Creek 1: With the score tied, 1-1, early in the second half, the WPIAL champion Jaguars (24-1) pulled away to avoid an upset at Elizabeth Forward. Jon Browne scored three goals.

Ligonier Valley 3, South Park 2: Despite goals from Bill Marnik and Brian Smith, South Park (17-5-1) was eliminated in overtime at Mansion Park Stadium in Altoona.

Ambridge 2, General McLane 1: The Bridgers (17-6) won their first PIAA playoff game by eliminating the District 10 champion at Warren. Brad Huwar and Jared Hooks scored goals for Ambridge.

Shady Side Academy 2, Clearfield 1: Ben Scott scored on a penalty kick with 10 minutes left for the Indians (19-4-1) after John Miller was fouled in the penalty box.

Boys' Class A soccer

South Fayette 1, Conemaugh Township 0: The Lions (16-5) went to overtime for the fourth consecutive game and eventually won in a shootout against the District 5 champions. Goalie Colin Fink earned his 22nd career shutout.

Seton-LaSalle 3, Hyndman 2: The Rebels (18-3-1) rallied from a 2-0 deficit late in the game to win in overtime. Seton-LaSalle's Steve Belsterling and Ryan Kelly scored goals 40 seconds apart with less than seven minutes left in regulation. Jim Boland scored the winning goal four minutes into the first overtime.

Girls' Class AAA volleyball

Baldwin 3, Upper St. Clair 0: The WPIAL champion Highlanders (17-0) remained undefeated in match play, outscoring the Panthers, 15-0, 15-9, 15-9, at Franklin Regional in a PIAA first-round contest.

Hempfield 3, Carrick 1: The WPIAL runner-up Spartans (17-2) upended the City League champion Raiders (14-2) in a best-of-five first-round match at Franklin Regional, 15-7, 11-15, 15-7, 15-6.
