WPIAL Class AA: No. 1 Washington runs past Carlynton

Top-ranked Washington had three backs rush for over 100 yards to run away from visiting Carlynton, 55-21, in the Interstate Conference last night.

Travis Thomas carried 11 times for 121 yards and touchdowns of 1 and 51 yards. Vontey Johnson carried nine times for 144 yards and touchdowns of 5 and 41 yards. J.R. Ward carried 11 times for 107 yards and a 21-yard touchdown.

"We've never had three running backs over 100 yards in the same game before," Washington Coach Guy Montecalvo said. "And, for the second week in a row, our defense held an unbeaten opponent to minus yards rushing."

Washington (7-0, 5-0) led, 35-0, at halftime. Washington quarterback Justin Gregula completed all seven passes he attempted for 128 yards, including touchdowns of 37 and 43 yards to D.J. Vallee.

For Carlynton, Dave Brown returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Mike Wilmus, who completed 15 of 25 passes for 217 yards.

Washington, which entered the game as the highest-scoring team in the entire WPIAL with 41.8 points per game, had 26 first downs and 559 yards. Carlynton had 11 first downs and 217 yards. Carlynton had minus 16 yards rushing.

"We played a great first half in all phases," Montecalvo said.

Waynesburg 62,

Cory Walsh ran for three touchdowns and the Raiders (6-1, 4-1) scored three touchdowns on interception returns as they defeated the visiting Bulldogs (0-7, 0-5) in the Interstate Conference. Walsh, who rushed for 104 yards on four carries, scored on runs of 33, 20 and 33 yards.

All of Walsh's touchdowns came in the first quarter as Waynesburg took a 41-0 lead. David Gregg returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown, Brant Blair returned an interception 15 yards for a touchdown and Bryan Golden returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown.

Waynesburg had 10 first downs and 369 yards. Beth-Center had four first downs and 125 yards. The Bulldogs had minus 8 yards passing, completing 3 of 29 attempts.

Brownsville 14,
Charleroi 7

Justin Samol carried 22 times for 150 yards and a 48-yard touchdown and Dan Solomon threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Doug Patterson to lead the visiting Falcons (3-4, 2-3) over the Cougars (3-4, 2-3) in the Interstate Conference.

Charleroi, which trailed, 14-0, after the first quarter, made it 14-7 at halftime on Bryan Murray's 1-yard run in the second quarter.

Brownsville had 15 first downs and 339 yards, and Charleroi had 11 first downs and 149 yards.

Brentwood 28,
East Allegheny 8

Ryan Mendel carried 26 times for 153 yards, including touchdowns of 38, 2 and 6 yards as the Spartans (6-1, 4-1) defeated the visiting Wildcats (1-4, 1-6) in the Century Conference.

Ford City 21,
Burrell 12

Curtis Cutts threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Rich Bennett and ran 13 and 8 yards to lead the visiting Sabers (5-2, 4-2) over the Buccaneers (5-2, 4-2) in the Allegheny Conference.

Apollo-Ridge 42,
Northgate 20

Zach Gourley rushed for 207 yards and two touchdowns and Grant Gourley passed for 190 yards and two touchdowns as the visiting Vikings (6-1, 6-1) defeated the Flames (1-6, 1-5) in the Allegheny Conference.

Zach Gourley, who carried 20 times, scored on runs of 37 and 14 yards. Grant Gourley completed 15 of 23 passes, including touchdowns of 7 yards to Luke Hill and 14 yards to Adam Ross.

Seton-LaSalle 41,
Quaker Valley 7

Joe DelSardo scored four touchdowns and rushed for 106 yards, helping the Rebels (4-3, 3-2) gain an Interstate Conference win over the visiting Quakers (0-7, 0-5).

Steel Valley 55,
Southmoreland 14

Luke Getsy passed for 297 yards and four touchdowns, pacing the visiting Ironmen (5-2, 3-2) to a lopsided Century Conference win over the Scotties (1-6, 1-4).

South Park 28,
South Allegheny 14

Ivan Braszo threw two second-quarter touchdown passes as South Park (4-3, 3-2) jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead on its way to a Century Conference win. The loss was the 18th in a row for South Allegheny (0-7, 0-5).

Freeport 16,
Riverside 0

Josh Heigert rushed for 171 yards to help Freeport (4-3, 3-3) gain a Allegheny Conference win over the host Panthers (3-4, 3-4) in the Allegheny Conference.

Mohawk 31,
Freedom 28

Freedom (3-4, 3-4) scored all 28 of its points in the fourth quarter, but visiting Mohawk (4-3, 4-2) held on for a Midwestern Conference win. Ryan Carr rushed for 176 yards for Mohawk, including a 97-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

New Brighton 35,
Laurel 6

Pat Glitsch had a 67-yard touchdown run and Brian Hensley a 66-yard TD run, leading the Lions (5-2, 5-1) to a Midwestern Conference win over host Laurel (1-6, 1-5).

Center 14,
Shenango 13

Jay Bishop's 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Joe Bolinger's extra-point kick lifted Center (4-3, 3-3) to a Midwestern Conference win. Shenango (1-6, 1-6) had taken a 13-7 lead on John George's 56-yard touchdown run.
