2003 Carnegie Science Center Awards for Excellence

The Carnegie Science Center Awards for Excellence are presented each year to recognize achievements related to science and technology in southwestern Pennsylvania. This year's awards ceremony will be April 30 at the Pittsburgh Hilton and Towers, Downtown.

In addition to Joseph Grabowski, cited in the university educator category, this year's winners are:

Chairman's Award -- Bayer Corp.

Advanced Manufacturing and Materials -- Ming Li, Alcoa Technical Center.

Biomedical -- Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.

Environmental -- Robert S. Hedin, Iron Oxide Recovery Inc.

Information Technology -- Asim Smailagic, Carnegie Mellon University.

Catalyst (popularizer of science) -- Alan J. Russell, director of Pitt's McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

Entrepreneur -- Alfred A. Kuehn, Management Science Associates.

Elementary educator -- Mary L. Bertsch, Trinity Area School District.

Middle school educator -- Ed Mihalacki, Hempfield Area School District.

High school educator -- Regis P. Joseph, Alternative Center for Education.
