Think heart disease, then think red dress Tuesday, February 11, 2003
Twenty-three-year-old Angela Lindvall, below, doesn't exactly look like a model for heart disease, but that's part of the message of a national campaign, The Heart Truth. It's emphasizing that any woman can be at risk for heart disease ("heart disease doesn't care what you wear") and it's rolling out the red dress as a symbol for this renewed awareness.
Organizers of the campaign, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute through a partnership with the fashion industry, hope the red dress will become as prominent for heart disease as the pink ribbon is for breast cancer. Like the local initiative Working Hearts, the national campaign wants women and doctors to recognize cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death among women.
