Seventh AIDS Walk June 10

Tuesday, May 15, 2001

The Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force will sponsor its seventh annual AIDS Walk on June 10 at Flagstaff Hill in Schenley Park, making strides toward increased funding and awareness.

This year's goal is $250,000--an increase over last year, when 3,300 walkers raised $238,000.

The money from the pledge walk funds a range of task force services, including HIV testing and education, the food pantry, free legal counseling and "buddy" programs that help AIDS patients stay on track with their medication and feel less alone with their disease.

The number of people seeking help through the task force continues to grow. Last year, about 7000 people in 11 counties, primarily Allegheny, were served.

About 3,500 walkers are expected on the 5-mile course that begins at 10 a.m. at Flagstaff Hill. This will be preceded by an ecumenical prayer service at 8:30 a.m.

To register or for more information on the walk, call 412-242-WALK (9255) or check the task force Web site at www.patf.org.
