Making friends with her new computer

Tuesday, December 26, 2000

By Mercedes Naughton

As I watched my grandchildren on their computer a question popped into my head. Can a 73-year-old woman find happiness with a new computer? I decided I was going to buy one and find out. I am not too old for a new "spirit of adventure."

Mercedes Naughton found a whole new world in her computer.

My family couldn't believe it when I told them about my new computer. One by one, they became my teachers. They hung in there with me when I became frustrated. It wasn't long before I became fascinated with each new bit of information.

I named my computer "Buddy." We became fast friends. I'm in a different world when I turn on my Buddy. He gives me the news, the weather, pictures. I am doing quite well with e-mail and have learned to use the Internet.

Thanks to Buddy, I researched the musical, "The Scarlet Pimpernel" and won two tickets to see it. The play was fantastic and the costumes were beautiful.

I play games with Buddy, too. If I play a game of solitaire, I start to relax. It's much better than taking medicine.

Being a mother of five and grandmother of nine has kept me busy. I still baby-sit, but buying a computer has changed me for the better. These past few months have been great. Goodbye aches and pains. Hello to a new life.

Mercedes Naughton, 73, of the West End, is a retired waitress who worked at the Hilton Hotel and Towers, Downtown. She is a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and also visits senior citizen facilities, where she's known as the "Cookie Grandma" for her cookie contributions.
