How to make a request

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette mails a letter to each household with children under 12 who are receiving monetary assistance from the Department of Welfare. In an average year, over 10,000 letters are mailed that assist over 17,000 children. These families are asked to register with their local Salvation Army in October to be able to receive toys during the holiday season.

The Marines' Toys for Tots program also provides toys for groups who serve underprivileged children. The Marines and the Post-Gazette's Goodfellows Fund are teaming up with Pittsburgh Cares this year to make sure all kids age 14 and under will receive toys during the holidays. Families who otherwise cannot afford toys can visit the Toys for Tots open house:

Toys for Tots Open House

Dates: Friday, Dec. 12 and Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014
Times: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Location: Guardian Storage Solutions, 2839 Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15222 (Strip District)
Need to bring:

  • Valid ID or driver's license
  • Proof of Need (Access Card or proof of government assistance/ unemployment)
  • Birth Certificate for each of the children for whom you're requesting toys
  • Utility bill, phone bill or other proof that you live at the physical address listed on your other information

Families can place a toy request in advance online. While this does not guarantee your toys, it will speed up the registration process for your family and help us to estimate the number of toys to stock for the Open House days.
