Emma Topping's Cracked Sugar Cookies

EMMA TOPPING'S CRACKED SUGAR COOKIES

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups flour
  • Dash of salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Bring ingredients to room temperature. Cream together sugar, butter and margarine. Add egg yolks and vanilla.

Combine dry ingredients then add to butter mixture.

Roll cookies into 1-inch balls, placing them at least 3 inches apart on an ungreased nonstick baking sheet.

Decorate, if desired, with colored sugars.

Bake for 20 minutes, then transfer cookies to a clean, flat surface or baking rack.

Makes about 3 dozen cookies.
