Cincinnati Chili

Cincinnati Chili, sent in by Sandy Rosvanis of Level Green, Westmoreland County, uses cocoa, allspice and cinnamon to give it a very distinctive flavor.

  • 1 medium sweet onion, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons chopped garlic
  • 2- (14-ounce) cans stewed tomatoes
  • 8-ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

In a stock pot or Dutch oven, saute onions and garlic until soft; do not brown. Add the remaining ingredients, including the raw ground beef.

Simmer about 30 minutes, stirring frequently to break up meat. Add water if needed.

Serve chili over spaghetti and top with one or all of the following: kidney beans, chopped onion, shredded Cheddar cheese, sour cream, hot sauce. Makes 8 to 10 servings.
