Molasses Crinkles

  • 3/4 cup soft shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 1/4 cups flour, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • Mix shortening, sugar, egg and molasses thoroughly. Sift together remaining ingredients and stir in. Chill dough.

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Roll dough into balls the size of large walnuts. Dip tops in sugar. Place sugared side up, 3 inches apart on greased baking sheet. Sprinkle each cookie with 2 or 3 drops of water to produce a crackled surface. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or just until set but not hard. Yield: About 4 dozen 2 1/2-inch cookies.
