Mary's Dutch Apple Cake

Mary Culan of McKees Rocks uses Golden Delicious apples for her recipe. Mary says, "My family has enjoyed this cake for many years."

2 1/2 cups sifted flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 tablespoons sugar
1 cup butter
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
6 medium apples or more *
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 1/2 tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift flour, measure, sift with baking powder and sugar.

Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. Add vanilla and eggs. Blend with flour mixture. Press evenly into bottom and sides of a 15-by-10-by-1-inch pan. Arrange peeled and sliced apples in overlapping layers to cover dough.

Combine remaining ingredients; sprinkle over apples. Bake for 45 minutes or until apples are done and topping is golden brown.

*The recipe calls for 6 apples but more may be used; it depends on how closely you overlap the apples. We used 7 medium to large apples.
