In the tiny town of Chewandswallow, every meal is a happy meal because the food "rains" from the sky! No one has to bother with supermarkets or drive-through lines. That is, until the food starts getting bigger and bigger (ages 4-8). For older children, "Spaghetti and Meatballs for All: A Mathematical Story" by Marilyn Burns, poses some interesting perimeter and area problems as an influx of guests ruins Mrs. Comfort's careful seating plans (recommended for ages 4-8, but the math is more appropriate for 8- or 9-year-olds).
1/2 pound ground beef
1/4 cup Italian-style dry bread crumbs
2 tablespoons milk
2 tablespoons beaten egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
Dash pepper
2 tablespoons oil
1/2 cup chili sauce
1/2 cup grape jelly
Mix together ground beef, bread crumbs, milk, egg, salt and pepper. Roll into 24 1-inch meatballs. Brown meatballs for 5 minutes in 2 tablespoons of oil. Remove from frying pan, and pour off oil. Heat grape jelly and chili sauce in frying pan, stirring constantly until jelly melts. Add meatballs. Simmer uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes.
