Sally Levenson and Peggy Kundin, the Squirrel Hill sisters whose chicken soup won the coveted title of "The Best Chicken Soup This Side of Jerusalem" at the Jewish Community Center's block party Sunday, are gracious victors. Levenson and Kundin, who make soup for the Jewish sabbath, known as Shabbot, have agreed to share their award-winning recipe, which they learned from their late grandmother, Miriam Berman, and their mother, Jeannette Kanner of Charleston, W.Va.
Word of the sisters' success has drawn the attention of TV talk-show host Rosie O' Donnell. A member of O' Donnell's staff telephoned Kundin Monday and asked the sisters to make a videotape that shows how they make their magical broth. At first, Kundin thought a friend was playing a joke on her but later verified that it was a legitimate request.
"We'll be making a five-minute video and submitting it to her. We'll be using our ladle that we won" at the contest, Levenson said.
