The downtown Macy's Department Store was, until 2006, the flagship of the Kaufmann's chain of stores.
Officially called the R.H. Macy Company, Macy's is one of the country's largest department store chains with a wide variety of merchandise. The company was founded in 1858 by Rowland Hussey Macy (1822-1877).
Kaufmann’s Department Store, nicknamed decades ago as “The Big Store,” was located in this 12-story, one-million-square-foot historic building.
The department store often hosts events including fashion shows and special holiday performances sometimes in its auditorium.
