Description

Opened in 1999, the Whitaker Center is the first complex of its kind in the United States to use science as an entry to the arts and is the mid-state's premier center for arts, education, entertainment and cultural enrichment.

It has three main components: the Sunoco Performance Theater, the Select Medical IMAX Theater and the Harsco Science Center.

The Select Medical IMAX Theater is a large-format cinema arts theater featuring modern educational films and new releases. It is the only IMAX theater in central Pennsylvania and is generously supported by Select Medical Corporation.

The Harsco Science Center features more than 240 fun and informative exhibits that explore physical science, natural science, life science, mathematics and technology. There are also special limited-engagement exhibits. The science center is generously supported by the steel company, Harsco Corporation.

The Sunoco Performance Theater is a 664-seat performance space with seven resident companies at the theater and is generously supported by petroleum company Sunoco, Inc.

The center is named in honor of Uncas A. Whitaker (1900-1975) a prominent mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, lawyer, entrepreneur and philanthropist who founded Harrisburg-based electrical device manufacturer AMP, Inc.
