One of the city's most dynamic neighborhoods, Oakland is an urban and diverse home to several universities, museums and hospitals, as well as an abundance of shopping, restaurants and especially students.

Oakland is often considered "Pittsburgh's college town" as it is home to some of the city's finest education institutions such as Carlow University, Carnegie Mellon University and especially the University Of Pittsburgh.

The neighborhood's business core is on Forbes Avenue, with large clusters of shops on Fifth Avenue and South Craig Street (which connects both avenues).

Representing the neighborhood is the Oakland Business Improvement District (OBID), whose mission includes promoting Oakland as a renowned destination point with a business, retail and institutional mix offering unique products, services and events.
