The Pennsylvania State University (commonly known as Penn State) is a state-related, land-grant university.
The university has 24 campuses throughout Pennsylvania, including a virtual World Campus. The enrollment at Penn State is over 84,000 students, placing it among the ten largest public universities in the United States. Penn State offers more than 160 majors and administers a $1.4 billion endowment. Although it receives funding from the state and is connected to the state through its board of trustees, it is otherwise independent and not subject to the state's direct control.
This campus was founded in 1958 in New Kensington and in 1966 moved to into a modern facility on seventy-two wooded acres in rural Westmoreland County. An interesting component is the half-mile Nature Trail which serves environmental education resources for both the campus community and local area school districts.
