The Five Star Trail is a "rail with trail" located along the Southwestern Pennsylvania Railroad corridor between Lynch Field in Greensburg and Youngwood in central Westmoreland County. It is so named because of the five municipalities through which the trail passes: Greensburg, Hempfield Township, South Greensburg, Southwest Greensburg and Youngwood.
Rails with trails (RWT) are a small subset of rail trails in which a railway right-of-way remains in use by trains yet also has a parallel recreational trail.
The Five Star Trail provides the opportunity for non-motorized outdoor recreational experiences including walking, jogging, bicycling and cross country skiing, as well as alternative transportation resources.
The trail is maintained by volunteers of the The Five Star Trail Chapter of the Regional Trail Corporation, A non-profit corporation within Westmoreland, Allegheny and Fayette Counties to promote the conversion of railroad right-of-way into recreational trails.
Daily, dawn to dusk.
Free, on-site parking is available.
