Founded in 1984, the University Of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) became a National Cancer Institute was designated a Comprehensive Cancer Center in 1990. UPCI, the only cancer center in western Pennsylvania with this elite designation, serves the region's population of more than 6 million. The Institute's 500 faculty and staff, representing over 30 disciplines, work together closely to improve the understanding of cancer and to develop new lifesaving procedures in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

The programs at UPCI include:

* The Center For Environmental Oncology, which promotes further research on environmental links to cancer and educates the public about our findings. Specific goals include teaching health professionals how to recognize environmental risk factors in their patients, as well as informing patients, their families and communities about cancer risks and ways to reduce their chance of recurrence. The Center also provides healthy lifestyle options for the public, tests ways of reducing cancer risk through "greening" buildings, and evaluates public policies related to the environment and health.

* The Behavioral Medicine & Oncology Program conducts basic, clinical, and translational research across a broad front of cancer-relevant issues. Specific areas range from investigation of mechanistic aspects and clinical implications of stress and stress-related molecular changes on immune function to issues related to cancer prevention, including smoking cessation, weight loss, and other aspects of long-term behavior change that can reduce cancer risk.

* The Cancer Epidemiology, Prevention & Control Program aims to acquire new information regarding cancer risk and to evaluate the effectiveness of new cancer control methods.

* The Cancer Genetics Program provides expert clinical consultation in cancer genetics, to develop a cohort of patients and families with hereditary cancer for a variety of research studies, and to provide training and continuing medical education to medical professionals.

Built in 1989, the UPCI facility is an architecturally modern building featuring 88,000 square-feet of laboratory, office and meeeting space.
