The dynamic Pittsburgh-based ensemble, IonSound program of new electro-acoustic music created by acclaimed American composer Mason Bates --- who is currently in residence at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Distinguished by his innovations in orchestration and large-scale form, Bates is best known for his expansion of the orchestra to include electronics. Bates' "Red River" conjures a journey down the length of the Colorado River, with cascading water figuration flowing into quicksilver electronica rhythms; and his "From Amber Frozen" offers an indigenous approach to a string quartet.
