Named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine, the holiday celebrates love and affection between intimate companions. It was established as a religious holiday in 496 CE by Pope Gelasius I and later became associated with romantic love in the circle of English poet Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.
