Shop Featured Artist: Amber Coppings

Stop by the center's gift shop to see a special display of local artist Amber Coppings' textile designs.

Hand- and machine- sewn applique details are art-inspired, geometric and are handcut from pieces of organic cottons, bamboo rayons and cotton jerseys that are hand-dyed with shibori techniques or digitally designed by Amber Coppings in her Lawrenceville studio. This allows for the most artistic expression and enhances the handmade nature of each individual piece. Other items being featured are hand-dyed infinity scarves, lightweight "Suzi" Hoodie Cape Vests and sumptuous handbraided organic cotton belts with vintage buckles.

A 2013 sequel to the critically acclaimed 2010 documentary, this film continues to examine communities in the United States impacted by natural gas drilling and, specifically, a drilling method known as hydraulic fracturing that can be used in the Marcellus Shale.

The Marcellus Shale is a unit of marine sedimentary rock that contains largely untapped natural gas reserves.

Mix and mingle with art lovers and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial cartoonist Rob Rogers for the opening of a fun new exhibits of his "Brewed On Grant" strips from the past seven years that feature Luke Ravenstahl.

Born in 1980, Luke Ravenstahl became the youngest mayor in Pittsburgh's history at the age of 26. He is among the youngest mayors of a major city in American history. Despite the fact that Ravenstahl has reached the ripe old age of 33, Rogers continues to draw the mayor as a six-year-old boy addicted to juice boxes.

The Rust Belt Rising Almanac Tour

Take part in a non-traditional book event as this national tour stops in Pittsburgh.

The Head & The Hand Press in Philadelphia is releasing "The Rust Belt Rising Almanac", an anthology of stories about growth, change and loss in America's Rust Belt though short stories, poems, essays and art, designed in the style of the almanacs of old. This almanac includes a prose story set in Pittsburgh about growing up in the shadow of the Duquesne, now GenOn, Power Plant.

This is not be your typical book talk. To share these stories with the people of the cities featured, company founder Nic Esposito appears with Philadelphia musician Todd Henkin to showcase the work in the Almanac through performance-based story telling and song.
