The 49th annual Three Rivers Arts Festival runs through June 22, Downtown. The Duquesne Light Artists Market and indoor exhibits are open noon to 8 p.m. daily and the UPMC Health Plan Family Festival noon to 7 p.m. daily. Food courts and performances are available noon to 9:30 p.m. Most programs are free.

What the symbols mean:

More than 300 local, national and international artists and craftspersons return on a rotating basis throughout the festival, starting with 144 exhibitors June 6. New artists arrive June 12, 13, 17 and 20. Eight new local emerging artists, selected by the festival, will be among the participants. Artists will demonstrate their techniques on the hour from noon to 8 p.m. June 7 and 8.

17 nights of performance in the Stanwix Triangle beginning tomorrow night with progressive rock band moe and closing with alt-country guitarist Alejandro Escovedo. The punk rock New York Dolls play June 15.

Ten artists or artist teams have created installations within used shipping containers placed along Forbes Avenue between Stanwix Street and Market Square. Attack Theatre will perform a new interactive dance work created for the site, "The Heist," at 5:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday and June 13 through 15.

Weeknight happy-hour concerts begin on the Market Square Stage at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Also at Market Square is Schenley High School graduate Nathan Green's interactive public art sculpture "Dream Machine."

Artist Tom Sarver will present one of his Art Olympics, beginning at 6:30 p.m. June 21, with accompaniment from Pittsburgh jazz band Opek. And from June 14 through 20 artwork celebrating Pittsburgh folk-hero Joe Magarac, the superhuman steel worker, will be presented.

The UPMC Health Plan Family Festival focuses on environmentally conscious hands-on art experiences, and introduces a new Community Stage where the region's children will perform dance, music and theater.

The Wintergarden exhibition is "Icing on the Cake," non-edible birthday cakes in a variety of media created by members of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh in celebration of Pittsburgh's 250th anniversary.

A barebones productions staging of Richard Greenberg's 2003 Tony Award winning play, and the flagship event of the festival's third annual 4th River Project.

The story revolves around the repercussions caused by the star center fielder of the world-champion New York Empires when he casually announces that he is gay.

Themes like democracy, racism, celebrity, sexuality and discrimination are examined through the lens of sport. It opens at 8 p.m. June 6 and continues Wednesdays through Sundays until June 22. A Spoken Word and Media Performance by Pittsburgh artist Vanessa German, will be given at 7 p.m. June 20 at the Harris Theater, followed by a reception.

Performances will also be given at 2, 7 and 9 p.m. June 21.

"Testify" is presented in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Pittsburgh Filmmakers ($5).

Site-specific installations by ceramists Jeffrey Mongrain and Nicholas Kripal will be sited inside and on the grounds of Trinity Cathedral.

The artists have created installations in places of worship across Europe and the United States.

Viewing hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Several of the 4th River Projects will be presented at the festival's 937 Liberty Ave. headquarters.
• "Along These Rivers: Poetry & Photography from Pittsburgh" -- A book, edited by Judith Robinson and Michael Wurster, comprising work by 88 local artists and published in celebration of the city's 250th anniversary.
• Contributing poets will read at 3 p.m. June 7 in a program titled "Along These Rivers: Poetry from Pittsburgh" ($5), complemented by the exhibition "Along These Rivers: Photography from Pittsburgh," which runs June 6-11.
• At 8 p.m. June 13 and 14 and 2 p.m. June 15, Pittsburgh Playback Theatre presents "The Unintended" by Paulo Nzambi, based on the plight of refugee Afghani children in Pakistan ($10). The play is complemented by an exhibition of photographs by Khadra Mohammed of the Pittsburgh Refugee Center, "Forgotten Refugee Children: No Return Home," June 13-22.

• Three new plays by local playwrights will be read in the 4th River Pittsburgh Playworks Play Development Lab on the following dates ($5 each): at 7 p.m. June 16 and 19, "12 DOGS" by Jeanne Drennan; at 7 p.m. June 17 and 20, "Violet Sharp" by William Cameron; at 7 p.m. June 18 and 1 p.m. June 21, "Bread of Angels" by Jozef Spychala.
