Upon entering the chip shop in the
White Gates Community Project in Newry, youth development worker Gordon Ross playfully
picks up Graham Taylor, 6, by his ears. Well, not really. Graham is holding onto
Ross' forearms for the lift. The White Gates Project is an outgrowth of the Pittsburgh
Newry Partnership, founded in 1991 with the support of Steelers President Dan Rooney,
whose grandfather and namesake was born and raised in this area of Newry. Before the
project was started, unemployment was near 60 percent. Now the project provides 25 jobs
and is growing.
